TMJ Exam
Demonstration of how to perform a TMJ exam.
This examination of the temporomandibular joints has many applications in the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders.
The TMJ exam is also necessary in evaluating the appropriateness of mandibular advancement devices (MAD) for the treatment of sleep apnea.
Mandibular advancement devices, such as the Somnodent, are an emerging alternative to CPAP machines for sufferers of sleep apnea. While the CPAP machine has traditionally dominated the market, these smaller devices are gaining popularity.
For many patients with sleep apnea, this will be a preferable solution compared to the CPAP machine and many report using their mandibular advancement device with more regularity than the CPAP.
It’s the dentist’s role to not only fit the patient with the Somnodent, or similar device, but also to qualify the patient for receiving it.
Before moving forward with MAD treatment, most dentists prefer to administer a temporomandibular joint examination. For patients suffering from TMJ disorders – or TMD – the Somnodent and similar devices may not be ideal.
This video covers the necessary steps involved in the TMJ exam as well as:
- Soft tissue examination
- Bite registration techniques
Throughout this examination, you’re going to be looking, listening, and feeling for sign of pain in not only the temporomandibular joint, but in all the mastication muscles.
In particular, pay attention to any popping or grating you hear as the jaw is opening and closing.
If, after your TMJ examination, you feel a mandibular advancement device such as the Somnodent is an appropriate or favorable treatment option for your patients, continue to the range of motion instructional video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKsR1RypVQo
