Colmar France Walking Tour | Stunningly Beautiful Medieval Town Alsace

Colmar in France is the unofficial capital of Alsace's wine district. It is a stunningly beautiful medieval town with 500 years of history alternating between part of France and part of Germany. As a result, it's food, wine and dialect are influenced by both cultures.

Colmar's old town is full of beautiful cobbled streets with half-timbered medieval buildings. We visit the quartier des Tanneurs (tanners' quarter), the Quai de la Poissonerie (Fishmongers' Quai) and the Quartier de la Krutenau, otherwise known as Little Venice for its houses up against the river and the gondalas that run along it.

Colmar is the birth place of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi who created the Statue of Liberty in New York. A smaller copy was erected in Colmar on the 100th anniversary of his death. He built a number of statues in Colmar including the Schwendi fountain, named after Lazare von Schwendi, who is said to have brought the Pinot Gris graps from Hungary to Alsace.
