What’s the best finish for a workbench? Well, that depends on how much you care, and how much you want to care.

A workbench is a tool. It’s going to get scratched, dented, stained, glued, and abused. But if you spent weeks building a beautiful bench, it makes sense to give the finish at least a little thought before you start throwing chemicals at it.

In this video, I compare some of the most common workbench finish options:

- No finish
- Drying oils, like tung oil, walnut oil, and boiled linseed oil
- Hardwax oils like Natura OneCoat - https://amzn.to/4u91Q3n
- Oil-based varnish and polyurethane
- Danish oil
- Water-based finishes

We’ll look at the pros and cons of each, including protection, grip, repairability, cure time, odor, cost, and how easy they are to maintain. Then I’ll refresh the top of my own Split Top Roubo and show you which finish I’m using today.

Spoiler alert, the “best” finish is probably the one that gives you enough protection without making your bench too slick or too annoying to repair.
