Know the difference between Dry and Wet Macular Degeneration (AMD)

What is the difference between dry and wet macular degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) comes in two forms: dry and wet. Both affect the macula, the part of the retina responsible for central vision, but they differ in how they progress and impact eyesight.
Dry macular degeneration
This is the most common type, making up about 80–90% of cases. It happens when the retina thins and drusen (yellow deposits) build up under the macula. Dry AMD usually progresses slowly, with symptoms like blurred central vision, faded colors, or needing more light to read.
Wet macular degeneration
Less common but more severe. Wet AMD occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina and leak fluid or blood. This can cause sudden and severe vision loss, making it important to detect early.
What does this mean for AMD patients
Dry AMD: slow changes over time — lifestyle, diet, and supplements can help support eye health.
Wet AMD: faster vision loss — requires urgent medical treatment alongside ongoing vision support.
