Planet Earth: The Book of Time - Section of Earth and Environmental Sciences

The Earth is a uniquely hospitable planet, providing just the right conditions for life to thrive. But this fine balance can easily be upset, whether from naturally-occurring hazards like volcanic eruptions or earthquakes, or through man-made climate change. The Earth and its environment represent a fragile system.

To mitigate and manage potential disasters requires an interdisciplinary approach between both earth and environmental sciences. At the University of Geneva, the Section of Earth and Environmental Sciences fosters collaboration between the two different fields to allow us to understand natural disasters from recent history by looking at the events of the distant past.

To “read” the history of the earth the Section uses rocks and sedimentary deposits as their books. We use the deposits produced during recent events to interpret what happened during the long history of the Earth. Through this approach, as well as the close collaboration between disciplines, the Section of Earth and Environmental Sciences, are ensuring that through reading the past – from tree rings, to sediment records, to geochemical isotopes – we are better able to forecast the future.
