This anti-marijuana educational film from 1970 explains the dangers of marijuana use through the story of a young man named Tom, his parents, and Tom’s pot-smoking friends. The film is presented by the Downey Police Department through the cooperation of Rotary International, produced by Sid Davis with the cooperation of the Santa Monica Police Department, and is written and directed by Ib Melchior. The only known cast is the uncredited role of J. Edward McKinley as the father.

She knocks over a box and joints fall out (00:38). “Keep Off the Grass” title banner (00:44). Louise and her husband confront Tom about the joints (00:52). Louise leaves and Tom and his father talk (01:14). The father shows Tom a book as physical and psychological effects are listed (02:39). Tom and his father continue discussing (03:25). Tom and his father sit down together (04:15). The father hands Tom a booklet about Marijuana (04:45). Tom and his friend, Mack, are reading the booklet (05:05). They walk away (05:20). Tom and Mack are participating in a garden party where flowerpots hold marijuana plants (05:24). All guests are smoking joints (05:33). The camera focuses on one woman, who is smoking a joint (05:49). Tom is speaking to other guests (05:56). Views of the guests at the party, some drunk, some high on marijuana (05:59). Tom and Mack are driving in an Austin-Healey Sprite car model (06:40). They nearly collide with another car in an intersection (06:57). Mack continues driving recklessly (07:03). Someone asks Tom for spare change outside (08:49). Tom andMack arrive at the artist’s house (09:10). His wife calls for him (09:59). Her brother is being searched by the police (10:04). The brother is arrested as Tom, Mack, the artist, and his wife watch (10:27). The wife talks with the police officer (10:43). Bystanders yell at the officers (11;05). The officers enter their car and drive away (11:11). The artist and his wife rush the drive to the police station, and Tom and Mack follow them (11:15). They arrive at the police station (11:35). Tom walks by himself, thinking about his relationship with Marijuana (12:04). He looks at educational posters about drugs at the station (12:12). An officer starts talking with Tom (12:31). He shows Tom posters of drug criminals (13:56). He shows Tom photos from 1914, where heroin was sold over the counter, and of people losing control due to consumption of drugs and/or alcohol (14:32). A map of Switzerland (15:38). Photos portraying dire social conditions (15:41). The officer and Tom shake hands (16:04). Tom rejoins Mack, the artist, and his wife (16:14). Mack and Tom leave (16:18). Abstract patterns overlaid on footage (16:19). A room with people using drugs (16:26). Tom observes them (17:18). He asks Mack to leave, but Mack refuses (18:11). Tom leaves alone (18:20). He is robbed by a group in the street (18:49). Tom sits on a bench while newspaper pages are shown on the screen (19:27). Mack joins Tom on the bench (19:57). Mack offers Tom a joint, but Tom refuses (20:09). A young boy arrives to speak to Mack (20:18). Mack sells the boy a joint (20:23). Tom expresses his concern (20:33).
