Piano Man Billy Joel is the sixth best selling artist in history in American just behind Led Zeppelin and just ahead of Michael Jackson. After releasing his iconic song Piano Man in 1973, He became a household name with the diamond selling 1977 album the Stranger, as well as his massive hits We Didn’t Start the Fire, Uptown Girl and It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me. and let’s be clear, most judge him from those big selling singles. but any true Billy Joel fan knows that his catalogue of amazing songs goes far deeper than that. He’s had 33 top 40 hits on the billboard hot 100 and a score of multi-platinum albums but he hasn’t released a new studio album in decades, as this segment will prove, there are many Billy Joel classics hiding in plain sight. Songs that for the most part, weren’t hits, 4 of these 5 were never released as singles but in my opinion they’re better than most of the songs that were big hits. So here are 5 Billy Joel Hidden Gems that you ought to add to the soundtrack of your life with commentary by his former Drummer, the one and only Liberty Devitto as well as a suprise cameo. Let’s get into this 5er.

#5 The Night Is Still Young From his Greatest hits Volume 1 and 2 compilation that is one of the best selling album ever in the US and was released in 85.
#4 Sleeping with the Television on from the #1 1980 album Glass Houses. THIS SONG is gangbusters. For those who judge Billy from a couple of his most famous singles this is one of those songs that blows up any of your assumptions about the man.
#3 This Night from Billy’s Top 5 1983 album An Innocent Man,
After the very serious 1982 album The Nylon Curtain, Billy took a vacation and met Christy Brinkley, fell in love and started courting her, and that experience became the music of an innocent man a tribute to music before the Beatles, Early Rock and Roll before it lost it’s innocence, Doo Wop, Soul, Party Rock and he tips his hat to certain artists like the Drifters and Ben E. King with the title track, James Brown on Easy Money, the Four Seasons on Uptown Girl, Early Motown with Tell Her About it etc.
#2 Laura from the 1982 masterpiece the Nylon Curtain. the Nylon Curtain is Billy’s Sgt Pepper, His Pet Sounds. It’s my favorite album of all time and in my estimation it is the supreme recollection of the baby boomer experience. I spent over an hour talking about this album with Liberty Devitto and hope to do the same with billy someday.
#1 Until The Night from Billy’s 1978 number one album 52nd Street. Now 52nd street has quite a few hidden gems on it that in my take are better than the singles Form the album, namely. the Jazzy Zanzibar, the Latin ecstasy of Rosalinda’s Eyes and one of the greatest gutwrenching epics’s of Billy’s legendary career. Until the Night.
