The tree's survival depends on how much damage the lightning did. University of Memphis Director of Landscape Joellen Dimond says some trees are immediately killed, while others can survive. She recommends fertilizing the tree and spraying the streak in the bark with an insecticide to keep insects from attacking the damage. If the tree survives, after a few years it will grow over the damage and heal.
