The first practical bicycle with inflatable tires was invented in 1887 by Scottish veterinary surgeon John Boyd Dunlop for his son's tricycle to improve its ride on cobblestone streets; he used inflated rubber tubes encased in canvas, which proved significantly more comfortable and faster than the solid rubber tires of the time, leading to a patent in 1888 and the eventual widespread adoption of pneumatic tires for various vehicles.
