On November 20, 1979, an extremist group led by Juhayman Al-Otaybi seized the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the holiest site in Islam. They claimed that their leader, Muhammad bin Abdullah Al-Qahtani, was the Mahdi, a prophesied figure believed to bring justice.

The group managed to block access to the Kaaba and held thousands of worshippers hostage. They were armed with firearms and explosives. The incident shocked the world because it took place at one of the most sacred locations in Islam.

The Saudi Arabian government, assisted by special forces and several foreign advisers, launched a siege that lasted for more than two weeks. On December 4, 1979, the Grand Mosque was finally recaptured. Many members of the group were killed, while others were later put on trial and executed.
