Music - The Shining Main Theme Reimagined
by Ferris Durden
The music you hear is a reimagining of "Dies Irae" ("the Day of Wrath”), a13th century Gregorian Chant. Historically, it is best known from its use in the Roman Rite Requiem (Mass for the Dead or Funeral Mass). The melody has been used in countless films, perhaps, the most well-known as the theme from Stanley Kubrick’s psychological horror masterpiece, The Shining (1980). The Shining composers Wendy Carlos and Rachel Elkind based their interpretation of the “Dies Irae” from the melodies in "Dream of a Witches' Sabbath" from Symphonie fantastique (1830) by French composer, Hector Berlioz. This version uses the melodies from Berlioz’s interpretation, too, and puts a contemporary spin on the “Dies Irae” with big guitars, drums, and synths, with eerie, broken, creepy pianos.
