Using External Hard Drives In Music Production (2021)
In this video, I'll show you how I use external drives in my home studio for music production and why it's beneficial to use external drives rather than doing everything off of your internal drive. Although this is somewhat of a mundane topic, it's extremely important. Not only will proper file management in music production prolong the life of your internal drive (especially important in new MacBooks where drives are soldered to the logic board), but it will allow your internal drive to operate at optimal performance as the external drives take on more of the work.
Right now I use my internal MacBook SSD to run my OS, applications and DAW, my LaCie 1TB SSD to run virtual instrument libraries, my LaCie 1TB HDD to run my samples libraries/DAW files/audio files and two 4TB G-Technology hard drives as backup drives that I rotate between daily. I plan on expanding this setup soon to split a sample library drive from another drives that holds my DAW and Audio Files and to get a 3rd backup drive that's backed up once a month and stored offsite in case there is a theft or fire in my condo.
I hope this video is helpful! Let me know in the comments what you do today to manage files and what works for you!
