10th Alive Day

It’s hard to believe it’s been ten years since the day that would change my life forever. November 21st, 2010 was a day I would die but it was also a day that led to new life.....more life. 

The past ten years have been a long and difficult but beautiful journey. A journey of discovering perseverance, purpose, and perspective through long, dark, and painful nights. A journey of support, love, and healing from family, friends, and community. 

I am thankful for my path because it led me to who and where I am today. We never know what the future holds. All I know is that I am forever grateful to be here and I will never take moment, breath or sunrise for granted.

When a hang grenade detonates it sends shrapnel 700 feet at 24,000 feet per second
On November 21, 2010 those hot pieces of burning steel laced with gunpowder tore through my body, changing my life forever...

As I felt the sensation of warm water flowing across my body I realized I was bleeding out,
And (at 21 years old) on that hot dusty rooftop I faded from consciousness and the world for what I thought was my last time on this earth.
Through the darkest void I traveled while being resuscitated three times,
Five weeks later I woke up.

The average heart will be 2.5 billion times in a lifetime.
And-
Every beat
Every breath 
Every second is an irreversible moment you can never get back.
So go! and live your life so that when you reach those final moments and breaths you smile because you lived a life worth living.

Today is the tenth anniversary of my alive day and another bonus day I never expected to have.
Thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way. I wouldn’t be where I am without you. 
Thank you to everyone who has doubted me along the way. I wouldn’t be where I am without you.
When you get up in the mornings look at yourself in the mirror and 
No matter where you are in life.
No matter how hard you’ve been knocked down.
No matter how dark and difficult the days that lie ahead may be.
Always remember....
You are worth it!
And...the smallest of steps completes the grandest of journeys. 

People always ask me, what’s next? Like
my greatest accomplishments are behind me.
I just smile and shrug because deep down  I know I am just getting started.
