THE GURDON LIGHT: The Mysterious Floating Light That Has Haunted a Railroad Track for Over a Century
Gurdon, Arkansas. A railroad track runs through the pine forests outside town and has done for well over a hundred years. And for most of those hundred years people walking that track at night have seen the same thing. A light. Floating at roughly head height above the rails, moving slowly, sometimes approaching, sometimes retreating, sometimes hovering completely still for minutes at a time before vanishing and reappearing further down the line. It is not a reflection. It is not an optical illusion caused by distant traffic. Scientists from Hendrix College investigated the phenomenon in the 1990s and concluded the light was a real physical phenomenon produced by piezoelectric energy generated by fault lines beneath the track, crystalline rocks being compressed by geological pressure and releasing light as a result. The explanation was widely reported and widely accepted. And then people who knew the track pointed out that the light had been seen for decades before the road that would have produced the reflection existed, that it moves in ways piezoelectric discharge does not, that it has been seen approaching and retreating in response to people calling out to it, and that the scientific explanation does not account for every documented behaviour of the light.
