Why do PGT-A if “abnormal” embryos can become healthy babies?

You may have heard that some types of embryos with "abnormal" results on PGT-A can lead to the birth of healthy babies. This raises a good question: why do PGT-A if even the abnormal embryos can become healthy babies?

Some key points to remember for this discussion:
- As the age of the egg provider increases the chance for each embryo to have a chromosome abnormality (abnormal PGT-A result) increases too
- Most embryos with abnormal results on PGT-A will not lead to the birth of a baby
- Embryos with "normal" PGT-A results usually have a higher chance of leading to the birth of a baby than embryos with "abnormal" PGT-A results
- We can't tell which embryos will have normal or abnormal chromosomes based on how they look under the microscopy

The usefulness of PGT-A is debated, but one way that it could help: SPEED.

If the egg provider is older and is making a lot of embryos, PGT-A can help us *prioritize* the embryos for transfer. If we didn't have the PGT-A results it could take many embryo transfers before we happen to transfer one with normal chromosomes. Having the PGT-A result helps us prioritize the embryos with normal chromosomes, potentially speeding up the time to the birth of a baby.

PGT-A can also be helpful when someone is able to do another egg retrieval if the first one doesn't complete their family. If the PGT-A results from the first IVF cycle are all abnormal, the person could choose to do another IVF cycle right away. This can save time, allowing them to do the second retrieval when their eggs are younger than if they had tried and failed with all of the embryos from the first retrieval.

There is a lot of nuance in PGT-A and the different types of "abnormal" results. Meeting with a genetic counsellor can help you understand them so you can decide what next steps you want to take. PGT-A isn't right for everyone and so meeting with a genetic counsellor to learn about it BEFORE IVF can be helpful as well.
