Austin Smotherman caught absolute fire at the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches

After missing the cut here in 2022, Smotherman returned to PGA National and delivered a career-tying 9-under 62 — powered by six straight birdies (Nos. 7–12) — to grab a one-shot lead after Round 1.

He becomes just the seventh player to shoot 62 or better at PGA National in this event, joining names like Tiger Woods and Brian Harman.

The course setup has become a talking point, with overseeding making conditions softer and more “gettable” compared to past years. Winning scores have steadily dropped — and Thursday showed why.

Nico Echavarria sits one back after a 63, but the day belonged to Smotherman — who’s still searching for his first PGA TOUR win and experimenting with a freer putting style this week.

So far?
So good.
