Stop Saying tempo to sound more natural in Portuguese!
This lesson is all about when we don't the word "tempo" for time. Sound like a native speaker. Enjoy and let me know which one is your favourite ^_^
Please note that the resulting "linked" words in this video are not the way they would ever be written.
Portuguese is a stress-time language and so many people struggle with understanding Portuguese when it's spoken to them or wonder why people will switch to English because they see you struggle with the pronunciation when YOU are trying to speak.
RED AND GREEN LETTERS REPRESENT ELISIONS:
The red letters represent vowels that are:
1 - pronounced very quickly and subtly;
2 – vowels with very reduced duration making it appear that they are not being pronounced at all. (The pronunciation of the preposition “de” and the “ue” in words like “queria” in fast sentences are good examples of this)
And green represent vowels or letters that:
1 – merge words together;
2 - change their original sound due to the merge;
These elisions happen in the spoken form only and can vary greatly depending on formality, speed of speech, and also on regional accent.
Don't feel like you need to learn how to do all these elisions from the start as they come with time and experience with speaking Portuguese. In general, native speakers don't really notice they even speak like this! I like to point the elisions out in my videos because I feel they are so important for learners to be aware of so they can improve comprehension. It's what ALL my students struggle with – ESPECIALLY in the ALGARVE ;)
