My lofi vid documentation of my "Lantern Mod" for my Elvis Mic the Shure 55SH SeriesII Unidyne Microphone that is my current main performing mic that i use with my Oopah Loopah Live Looping rig.

The LanternMod was something i had to come up with because the Mic has what i require which is a simple passive designed On/Off Switch that effectively when required mutes the Mic in the Off position mid performance. This is a simple but crucial requirement for me as a Solo Live Looper as often i perform in venues that either don't have a sound guy or they're simply not there to quickly respond to any mayhem that's taking place onstage... LOL

Over the years i've been experimenting with various Microphones to seek the best one for my intended application in Solo Live Looping. My criterias for what works best for me is also something that's applicable for most Solo Live Loopers who sing and BeatBox ie. you need a Mic that has a very narrow "Polar Pattern". Polar Pattern is what's called for the Mic's pickup Sensitivity width and distance from the front of the capsule. Great sounding condenser mics like the classic looking and sounding Neumann U87 mics have the capability to pick up sound from the front, side and back of the mic. This is great for recording isolated vocals in great sounding well treated room but not ideal for me because the hyper sensitivity and wide polar pattern of such mics would pick up more than i intend and it gets fed into my looper which adds and builds up as sonic mush.

The lantern mod has 2 colours Red/Blue where each colour is visually representative of the Mic's On/Off status. This helps me alot especially during mid performance where if during mid performance and things start to excite and build up in sonic intensity and i'm sensing the possibility of potential feedback or bleed in from the combination of the stage monitors, the house PA and hollering hecklers....LOL All i need is just to be able to switch the mic off without the need for additional stomp boxes in my rig that'll take up pedalboard space and require active power....and but i also need visual reminders of the Mics status hence the 2 colours provide that functionality and besides i think it's really cool looking :)
