The Testing of Discipleship

Synopsis: There is universal attestation by the early church fathers that Mark’s gospel is Peter’s recollection of his and the other disciples experience with Jesus. Peter must be selective in what he shares so there is personal significance in these passages. In Mark 3:20-35 Peter is sharing 3 very embarrassing moments in Jesus’ ministry. As a disciple Peter would have been personally impacted by this experience. His commitment to Jesus and his commitment to discipleship would have buckled under the weight of the reaction to Jesus by the crowd, his Kin, and the clergy from Jerusalem. As disciples we too will have moments when our commitment to Jesus is strained because of how our family reacts, popular opinion of Jesus, and the opinion of the so called experts. This sermon will address this passage from Peter’s perspective and provide insight on how to stand strong in the face of these challenges.
