Water Heater Will Not Drain? Fix It With These 3 Easy Steps

In this short video I am going to show you how to get your water heater to drain.
* I’ve broken this video into 3 sections.
* Section 1 I will show you how to drain your water heater
* Section 2 If this process doesn’t work I’ll show you a couple tricks that will make stubborn water heaters drain.
* Section 3 lastly I will explain why the water heater won’t drain.
Section 1 How to force it to drain.
1. Attach garden hose to drain valve
2. open valve let water flow for 60 sections. it should flow freely. If you skip this step the water heater most likely will not drain.
3. Shut off water at shut off valve
4. Open hot water fixture or undo a supply line

Section 2 tips and tricks
* If you are replacing your tank you can use these next two techniques. If you are keeping the tank you can skip ahead.
* Keep in mind: If the tank is leaking from the bottom it is most likely not repairable.
* If the water heater is close to 10 years old and leaking from the bottom its likely there is a pinhole somewhere in the inner steel tank. Again not repairable.
* Remove the thermostat
* Remove the TP valve and siphon water
* If your are flushing the water heater or draining it to do a repair then use this method.
* Remove the drain valve replace with a 3/4” Ball valve - If you want to know how to make your own drain valve jump over to Quick Water Heater . Com. Click on FAQ and scroll to “how to Make a drain Valve”. In the video we’ll show you exactly what parts you’ll need and how to install your valve.
Section 3 Why won’t it drain?
* Your water heater won’t drain because it blocked by sediment. Sediment builds up as the water heater gets older. The sediment eventually works its way into the drain valve and clogs it. We need to get the sediment our of the way in order to get the tank to drain.
