Making "Drive Safely" - Roadside Fatality Markers - Mixed media & Paper arts - Physical NFT

“Drive Safely” is a somber collection of 156 roadside fatality markers I photographed when riding a bicycle 4700 miles from Key West to Seattle in 2021. Since I was at high risk of being killed myself by cars, I saw it as my obligation to stop, notice, and record them. James Dean’s crash site is among the markers, and so is Natalie Wilson, Jason Dixon, and “Daddy”. Viewing from top left as you would read in western countries, you will notice the background progression from green to desert and back to green. This was the change in vegetation from the coastal Southeast, through the desert, and to the Pacific coast. You can see my shadow in a few of the images.

This unique handmade original is composed of individual cutouts of each marker adhered in the order they were captured. Gaps formed between the rows due to the variation in cut size and hand placement. These are gilded in 24k gold. The gaps represent the slight errors that can lead to shattered lives. The gold represents the fact that mistakes are inevitable, and that death is not the opposite of life - only the opposite of birth.
