How to Make 4th of July Cookies!

Hey everyone! These Fourth of July flag cookies would be great for a Fourth of July party, and they're so addicting -- just like a shortbread cookie! I'll be featuring more fan photos in an upcoming video, so be sure to share your creations with me on my Facebook page (http://on.fb.me/14LNQ1d) or Instagram @kawaiisweeteats with the hashtag #kawaiisweetworld!

I'm currently sick with a cold -- sorry if it shows through in the voiceover! If anyone has a good cure for a sore throat, let me know in the comments! It would be much appreciated haha :-)

Cookie Recipe (makes about 20 cookies)

1½ cups powdered sugar
1 cup (2 sticks) butter
1 egg
1 ½ tsp vanilla flavoring
2 ½ cups sifted flour
1 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp baking soda

Directions:

1. Cream butter until smooth. Sift in powdered sugar, and cream until light and fluffy.
2. Beat in egg and vanilla.
3. Sift together flour, cream of tartar, and baking soda. Add to wet ingredients in three additions, beating after each addition.
4. Divide dough into thirds, approximately 240g per third. Color one third blue, one red, and leave the last one uncolored. Wrap each third in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
5. Take dough out one at a time to roll out. Prepare dough as follows:

Red dough: Roll dough until 10" x 4.5"
Cut into one 10" x 2.5" strip, and two 10" x 1" strips.

White dough: Roll dough until 10" x 6"
Cut into two 10" x 2.5" strips, and one 10" x 1" strip.

Blue dough: Use hands to pull into a rectangular prism 10" long, 1.5" wide, and 1" thick.

Assembly:
1. Brush each piece with water before assembling to remove excess water and help pieces stick. Stack as follows (bottom to top):

10" x 2.5" uncolored
10" x 2.5" red
10" x 2.5" uncolored
Blue rectangular prism on left
10" x 1" red on right
10" x 1" uncolored on top of red
10" x 1" red on top of uncolored
See video for more clear picture.

2. Make sure to press all pieces together firmly! Freeze log for 20 min before slicing, then slice dough into ~1/4" slices. Trim cookies after slicing if needed.
3. Place cookies on Silpat or parchment paper lined baking sheet, and refrigerate sheet for 15 min prior to baking, then bake at 350 F for 7-8 min. Keep a close eye on the cookies so they don't brown too much!
