Artificial intelligence is quietly reshaping how operating rooms function, and the results are hard to ignore. A healthcare AI startup called Apella has raised $80 million in Series B funding to scale its ambient AI and computer vision platform across hospital operating rooms nationwide. The concept is surprisingly simple. Four ceiling-mounted cameras observe the flow of the OR and use computer vision to automatically identify and document up to 14 distinct surgical events, from patient arrival and anesthesia start to final closure and room turnover. Every timestamp is written directly into the electronic health record without a single nurse stopping to type it manually.
The real power lies in what happens with that data. The AI predicts when cases will finish, alerts the cleaning crew and next surgical team in real time, and identifies scheduling inefficiencies that were previously invisible. Houston Methodist deployed the technology across more than 200 operating rooms and reported a 15% increase in surgical capacity without adding staff or building new rooms. Their initial pilot in orthopedic and cardiovascular ORs coincided with 33 additional cases per month at a single site.
As an orthopedic surgeon, this technology addresses one of my biggest frustrations. Half of OR time is lost to coordination problems that computers handle far better than people. When my case wraps, the next team is already scrubbing. The cleaning crew is already moving. I actually get home for dinner.
Should AI be used in the OR? The platform is HITRUST CSF certified, uses automated privacy blurring, and focuses on tracking events and objects rather than identifying individuals. The question is no longer whether AI belongs in the operating room. The question is how much longer hospitals can afford to operate without it. Most facilities still run at roughly 60% OR utilization. That is not a staffing problem. That is a data problem, and AI is solving it right now.
