WhatsSaReGa Session 7 Notes -

Composition in Indian classical Music:

There are fixed compositions and improvised compositions in Indian classical music.Raga is a tool for fixed composition as well as improvised composition.

*Fixed composition- is the window to look at the beauty of the raag.Fixed composition becomes the vehicle of exposition.Bandish is the term for fixed composition in a raag. We will call it Byte-sized songs of Raaga.
There are different kinds of bandish

1.Khyal/chiz- The bandish that has words is called khyal/Chiz. Typical subjects of bandish that has words can be krishnaleela,saans nanand,guru shishya,philosophy etc.Bandish can interchangeably used with khyal/chiz.Khyal literally means “What is your thought”. Bandish is vehicle that helps to express your thought in Indian Classical Music.It becomes your companion in the exploration of Raga. Khyal can be of 3 types -
1.1 Vilambit khyal
1.2 Madhya laya khyal
1.3 Drut khyal

2.Sargam geet-When the words of the khyal/chiz/bandish replaced by Swar/notes of raag ,that bandish is called as sargam geet.

3.Lakshan geet-When the words of the khyal/chiz describes the definition of raag or the raag itself ,then that bandish is called lakshan geet.

4.Tarana- These are words that do not necessarily have a specific meaning.They sound like vocables.It is most typically in a fast tempo but there are few tarana that are in slow/vilambit tempo.

There are other kinds fixed compositions as below:
Tapkhyal-Mixture of tappa and khyal
Trivat-Combination of 3 things together out of the following-Bandish, sargam, tarana and sometimes it will also have the bols of tabla in it.
Chaturang- Combination of 4 things together.
Rules of Raga-

1.Ranjayte Iti Raga-Whatever entertains is Raga.

2.Every Raga has to have “Sa”( Shadja). Shath(six)+Ja (Janak). “Sa”Janak of the remaining 6 notes .”Sa” is the position from which the other 6 notes Re,Ga,Ma,Pa,Dha,Ni are configured. Without “Sa” the configuration will not happen.
And Alongwith “Sa” there must be “Ma” or “Pa” or both.

3.The Raga must have an Aroha and Avroha.

4.There must be atleast 5 notes in a Raga.

5.The Raga cannot have two forms of the same note consecutively after each other in one movement(Aroha or Avroha).
Eg: There cannot be two “Ga” going up. There can be shuddha Ga going up(in Aroha) and komal Ga coming down(in Avroha). But both shuddha Ga and komal together cannot be sung in one movement (in Aroha or Avroha). However there are some exceptions for example Raga Lalit.
