Mount Etna eruption leaves 12 kilometre ash cloud

Italy's Mount Etna has blasted a massive 12-kilometre-high volcanic ash cloud over Sicily.

Ash from the eruption blanketed neighbouring towns and villages, but there were no reports of injuries or property damage.

Nearby Catania airport was closed for several hours due to the eruption, and only limited air traffic has been allowed to resume.

The 3,330-metre-high volcano is one of Europe's tallest and most active, regularly spewing lava and ash over Sicily but rarely causes significant damage.
