Nation Update: Kite blues

Kites, one of the traditional symbols of Easter in Barbados, are now being flown year-round.
As with everything else, kite making has evolved. From trash bone and newspaper, the modern kite is made up of wood, plastic, a massive nylon cord, cloth tail and the bull.
The latter is what makes the loud noise and the louder the better for kite lovers. But they have become a nuisance to the person trying to sleep at night, those doing online school at home and even over the Geriatric Hospital. Kites are disturbing funeral services and everyday business operations.
In this in-depth piece, Nation News spoke to a cross section of people from the community – kite lovers, kite flyers, kite makers – to find out how they got involved, how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected them and how they can help others in the community who may not share their same love for kites.
