Israel-Qatar Tensions: Netanyahu Apologizes After Attack

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has issued a rare apology to Qatar after an Israeli strike in Doha killed a Qatari citizen. The apology came during a phone call hosted at the White House, personally arranged by U.S. President Donald Trump. Netanyahu assured the Qatari Prime Minister that Israel was targeting Hamas, not Qataris, and vowed not to violate Qatar’s sovereignty in the future.

The Qatari leadership welcomed the assurances, stressing that Doha remains committed to playing a stabilizing role in the Middle East. However, the move triggered outrage within Israel. Right-wing ministers and opposition leaders, including Bezalel Smotrich, Itamar Ben-Gvir, and Avigdor Liberman, blasted Netanyahu for apologizing to a country they accuse of funding terror and spreading anti-Israel sentiment.

This episode highlights the complex balancing act Netanyahu faces: maintaining Israel’s security narrative, responding to U.S. diplomatic pressure, and managing an increasingly divided domestic political scene. The apology could ease short-term tensions with Qatar, but its long-term impact on Israel’s internal politics and regional diplomacy remains uncertain.
