A 2018 SD Premium video - Ford F150 4.2L Waste Spark Ignition, One Coil Not Firing
2008 Ford F-150 4.2L had new plugs, wires and three different coil pack assemblies replaced in an attempt to fix this misfire. The problem is a bad driver in the PCM for one of the coils, causing a two cylinder misfire. Some key things that will be covered :Injector shut-down, can we use the downstream O2 to aid in determining type of misfire, thermal imaging camera of the misfiring bank, coil b circuit fault, wiring diagram of the ignition system, can we use a voltmeter to ID coil control, control testing with a test light, lab scope analysis.
- introduction and thermal imaging camera shots [00:00]
- trouble codes in memory [05:55]
- RPM or Cylinder drop test [06:30]
- wiring diagram of the ignition coil [09;10]
- P0506 IAC System RPM below expected false code [12:15]
- lab scope testing (primary ignition voltage) at the PCM connector [12:30]
- average voltmeter readings [13:30]
- control testing with a test light on a working and non working circuit [15:30]
- internal diagram of the ignition coil and what the voltage readings are telling us [17:10]
- T-pin dangers [18:40]
- intentional shut-down of an output driver (transistor) [18:55]
- warning on shorted outputs [22:50]
- using the downstream oxygen sensor to ID type of misfire [24:30]
- final take away and review of procedures shown [26:10]
