Christmas Bells by H.D. Longfellow

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (February 27, 1807 – March 24, 1882) was an American poet and educator whose works include "Paul Revere's Ride", The Song of Hiawatha, and Evangeline. He was the first American to translate Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy and was one of the fireside poets from New England.

H. W. Longfellow wrote this poem on Christmas Day of 1864. Longfellow penned “Christmas Bells” after his son Charles was wounded while fighting in the Civil War. Although the country remained at war as Longfellow wrote the poem, he expressed his hope that peace would return to the country. Following the Civil War, Longfellow’s poem was put to music, but the stanzas directly related to the Civil War were omitted from the carol.

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song

Till ringing, singing on its way
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime,
A chant sublime

Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The Carols drowned

The hearth-stones of a continent,

Первое упоминание имени поэта в России датируется 1835 годом и связано с выходом в свет в США его («профессора Лонгфеллова») путевых заметок «За океаном». В начале 1860 году на русском языке появились первые стихи Лонгфелло, хотя до этого уже предпринимались попытки прозаического перевода его стихотворных произведений. «Песнь о Гайавате» появилась в переводе Д. Л. Михайловского в 1866 (частично) и в 1868 (более полно), не вызвав особого интереса русской литературной критики того времени. Лишь перевод этой поэмы, сделанный И. А. Буниным в 1896 году, стал заметным событием в литературной жизни России и был вознагражден Пушкинской премией Академии наук (1903). Высказывание Лонгфелло об И.С. Тургеневе, сделанное им в 1871 после прочтения романа «Дворянское гнездо», характеризует как его самого, так и творчество Тургенева: «Благодарю, что вы познакомили меня с писателем, о котором я много слышал, но до сих пор ничего не читал. Его проза полна очарования, в ней есть какая-то свежесть. Особенно в описаниях природы. Очевидно, он немало путешествовал по ночам и встречал рассветы в полях и лугах». В 1903 году М. Горький писал: «Лонгфелло – прелесть!». Об интересе Лонгфелло к России и русской литературе свидетельствуют его попытки научиться русскому языку.
