Optical Properties of Nanomaterials 08: Metal nanoparticles

Lecture by Nicolas Vogel. This course gives an introduction to the optical properties of different nanomaterials. We derive fundamental relations describing the interactions between materials and electromagnetic radiation and discuss the resulting optical properties for dielectric, metallic and semiconducting particles.

This chapter discusses the optical properties of metal nanoparticles, including:
Dipole approximation
Fröhlich Criterion
Localized Surface Plasmon Resonances
Effects of material, dielectric environment and shape
Coupling of plasmon resonances in vicinity
Electromagnetic near-field enhancement
