In this video I discuss the Julia programming language and the growth that it experienced in the year 2020. For those of you who are totally unfamiliar, Julia is a general purpose programming language (though it was designed for strength in scientific computing) launched in 2012. Julia has many packages that make data science easy, whether that's DataFrames.jl for data manipulation, IJulia.jl for integration with the Jupyter framework, Plots.jl, Gadfly.jl, or VegaLite.jl for data visualization, or ScikitLearn.jl, TensorFlow.jl, or Flux.jl for machine learning.
There are many metrics pointing to Julia's growth over the last year. One of them is a major increase in the TIOBE index from #47 to #29. Other indicators are growth in the number of downloads and packages, almost doubling up to 25 million and over 5,000 respectively. (The latter is important because Julia package growth makes it much easier for organizations to get what they need out of the language!) To be fair, some of this growth may be due to increased demand for scientific computing and research as a result of the 2020 virus. However, everything we are seeing is very promising. Julia can be on track to compete with R and Python as a major player in the data science world in a few years' time!
