This video looks at the surprising military career of Eddie Albert, the actor millions remember as Oliver Wendell Douglas from Green Acres. Long before he became the flustered New York lawyer trying to survive life in Hooterville, Albert had already lived several lives. He worked as a paperboy, trapeze performer, insurance salesman, nightclub singer, radio host, Broadway actor, and Hollywood performer before the war changed everything.
Albert’s path to military service was anything but ordinary. Before America fully entered World War II, he reportedly used performance work as cover while gathering intelligence. He later enlisted in the Navy and served in the Pacific Theater, where his defining moment came during the Battle of Tarawa in November 1943.
Tarawa became one of the most costly and hard-fought amphibious battles of the Pacific campaign. Coral reefs prevented many landing craft from reaching shore, leaving Marines exposed in the water under heavy Japanese fire. Albert, assigned as a landing craft commander and salvage officer, saw wounded men trapped in the surf and chose rescue over routine orders. Under enemy fire, he helped pull dozens of Marines to safety and directed further rescue efforts.
After the war, Albert returned to acting and built a career that stretched across films, television, and the stage. He earned Oscar nominations, appeared in classic films, and became forever linked with Green Acres. But when asked about his greatest accomplishment, he remembered Tarawa. This is the story of the actor behind the sitcom legend, and the war hero many viewers never knew.
