You will learn how to develop a simple reliable process in Photoshop. You also get all the brushes and PSDs that I use in the guide (the same ones I use for most of my illustrations).

Most artists waste hundreds on new tools they'll never properly use. The problem isn't the tools, it's the missing process between excitement and execution.

----
Learning a new art medium often starts with buying tools and ends with those tools gathering dust. The gap between excitement and competence is not knowledge, talent, or even the right supplies. The gap is the absence of a simple, repeatable process for stepping through the fundamentals.

This video demonstrates that gap in real time through a complete 2-hour marker illustration of a fantasy dwarf character. With over twenty years of professional experience in digital illustration but almost none in traditional marker work, the demo reveals exactly where experience transfers and where it does not. The construction drawing succeeds because drawing fundamentals carry over regardless of medium. The inking phase with a Tombow brush pen shows where physical tool control needs dedicated practice. The color application, using only a handful of markers, exposes how scope management and material simplicity matter far more than having a professional marker collection.

Key concepts covered include secondary form (the drawing pass most intermediate artists skip that resolves detail before committing to permanent marks), scope reduction when tackling unfamiliar techniques, and the difference between process confidence and tool accumulation. The approach uses a systematic progression: thumbnail, construction drawing with secondary form, inks, then simplified color. Each phase builds directly on the previous one, making the learning structured and repeatable.

Also discussed: why spending $500 on markers as a student led to failure, how paper quality matters less than process quality in the beginning, and what changes when artists stop searching for the perfect tools and start repeating the fundamental steps.
