Giovanni's Medley Cover of "Hayop na Combo" and "Unang Paglantaw sa Sine"
0:02 - Chapter 1. "Hayop na Combo"
2:12 - Chapter 2. "Unang Paglantaw sa Sine"
Giovanni Lumanda performs his rendition of Yoyoy Villame's "Hayop na Combo" and Max Surban's "Unang Paglantaw sa Sine" with Rona Mae's guitar. Just a background information, Giovanni is a member of one of the Philippines' indegenous ethnic groups called the Subano or Subanen. He works for my aunt and uncle back in Ozamiz City. This city's in Mindanao. This video was taken in July 2006 during my last visit.

I had a friend who neither speaks Tagalog nor Cebuano, and he asked me to explain what Giovanni is singing. Well, my friend, here it is:
The first song is about town festivities and about having town bands. The singer is telling a story about his town's band. The members are so bad to the point of being replaced by animals and hence the title "Háyop na Combo." It means "Animal Band."
The second song is about an old moviegoer's unforgettable first experience at the movies. It was unforgettable because he thought he was about to die after the actor pointed a gun at the audience. He thought it was pointed at him specifically and he cowered in fear while other movie patrons looked at him. They were implying that he was so ignorant. Being an ignorant hick is a common butt of jokes. This song alludes to the early 1900s when movies were so new. During the screening of "The Great Train Robbery" in 1903, similar accounts happened where audience members thought they were about to die. (You should check it out on Wikipedia; it's hilarious!) They cowered in fear after an actor on-screen pointed and shot towards the audience. Interviewed later, they all said they were afraid they would get hit.
