How DNA From Waste Becomes Faces Of Unknown People #genetics #scientist #privacy

Stranger Visions is an art project where Heather Dewey-Hagborg used DNA from discarded items like cigarette butts, gum, and hair to create 3D printed portraits of strangers. She collected these samples from streets and public bathrooms, then analyzed the DNA using a method called forensic DNA phenotyping. This allowed her to estimate traits like ancestry, skin tone, eye color, and hair color, which were then used to build facial models. The results are not exact faces, but more like general predictions based on genetic data.

The project is meant to explore how powerful and sensitive DNA information can be. It shows that people constantly leave behind genetic traces without realizing it, and those traces can be used to learn personal details. This creates serious concerns about privacy, because DNA could potentially be used for tracking or identifying people in ways they never agreed to.
