Mounted Police | City Police Episode 7

In the new episode of the City Police series, presenter Alexander Nosik explores the life and work of the Moscow mounted police. It seems that in the 21st century when law enforcement has all sorts of hi-tech weapons and devices at their disposal, keeping a mounted police regiment could seem redundant.

But in reality, these units have their share of work. The mounted police patrol forested city parks with rough terrain, ravines and creeks, where a regular car or even a person on foot would be stuck. They’re also on duty during big public events like football games and open-air concerts.
A Moscow mounted police unit shift lasts 8 hours, and officers patrol in pairs. The horse is transported to the point in a horsebox. Officers have horses assigned to them. They all are taken excellent care of. Every day each horse gets ready for the shift just like a human. They have their faces washed, and their manes combed. A police horse also wears specific equipment to keep them warm and safe and prevent chafing.

Historically, the first mounted police teams appeared in Moscow in the 17th century. The Moscow Police Charter, drafted in 1686, contained the Riding Units chapter. They maintained order on the streets, hunted down illegal aliens and vagabonds. The 17th century mounted police also watched out for fistfights and shooting and stopped cabbies from entering the Kremlin. In the 19th century, the authorities introduced the rank of Mounted Rural Constable to enhance rural law enforcement.
Officers of the mounted police also train a lot in equestrian sports — this is their homage to the Russian cavalry.
