Tim's Simple Tire Sling for Starting Colts
Whether you call it sacking out, desensitizing, or simply preparing a young horse for the next step, we're all looking for safe, thoughtful ways to help our colts gain confidence.
In this video, Tim demonstrates a simple sling system he designed using nothing more than two tires and four ropes. The tires are securely fastened to the saddle, allowing the colt to become accustomed to weight and gentle pressure against both sides of its body—similar to the feel of a rider's legs—without introducing the added challenge of someone in the saddle.
This isn't meant to replace proper riding or careful colt starting. Instead, it's another tool that helps a horse think through new experiences before they're asked to carry a rider. By introducing pressure in a controlled, consistent way, many colts learn to relax, stay soft, and accept the sensation with confidence.
Every horse learns differently, and there is no substitute for good judgment, patience, and solid horsemanship. This is simply one technique that has worked well for us, and we hope it gives you another idea to consider as you prepare your own young horses.
