Notes: This song was written in monsoon 1909. 'Debalay', an association founded by Shashipada Bandopadhyay at the ground floor of his own house at Cornwallis street, was a place where prayers, religious discussions and speeches used to be held on a regular basis. Rabindranath often appeared for delivering speeches. One such incidence on 20th September 1909 reported in 'Punya-smriti' by Sita-Debi, daughter of Ramananda Chattopadhyay reads -

... Rabindranath had just finished reading out a small essay requests for a song flew from all sides. Normally he would not turn down such requests although this habit of him had changed at his older age due to ill health.

Rabindranath brought out a small notebook and started browsing through songs. He sang 'Megher pore megh jomechhe ...'; possibly it was one of his recent compositions. Only a handful audience in the small room were present in the program as it was not publicised well. But people thronged the alleys and the compounds nearby as soon as his brilliant voice was heard outside across the walls of the room. One gentleman had a few weird questions on discovering an impression of idolatry in the verse. What I still remember is that he refrained from replying as if in agreement. This song has two notations, one prepared by Dinendranath Tagore in Tritaal and the other by Surendranath Bandopadhyay in Ektaal. Apart from these two variations it does have another accepted arrhythmic version.

Notes: This song finds mention in 'Rabirashmi', 2nd part, written by Charuchandra Bandopadhyay -... I had been to Silaidaha on invitation from Rabindranath. His vessel was anchored from the alluvium opposite to the 'Kachhari' and adjacent to the one for Ajitkumar [Chakraborty], who was recuperating from ill health. I took shelter in the boat assigned for Ajit.
How can I ever forget the degree of attention he had rendered to me while my stay. He was eager to satisfy my appetite before his, all the time being concerned about my well-being, asking Ajit - You must look after your friend, he must not face difficulty of any sort. ...
... Rain and thunderstorm greeted us in the evening. The poet reiterated - come on Ajit, treat our guest with songs. He then came up with two songs - Aaji jharer raate tomar obhisaar ... and Kothay aalo ore kothay aalo ... .
I had taken both the songs with me with an intention to publish them in 'Probasi'. The piece of paper on which the poet had written the songs is still with me.
