Madagascar Falls to Military Rule | Another African Nation Joins Coup Wave

Madagascar plunges into political turmoil as President Andry Rajoelina is ousted following weeks of youth-led protests and public anger over corruption. Colonel Michael Randrianirina announced that the military has taken control, dissolving major institutions and leaving only the National Assembly intact. A transitional committee will rule for up to two years before elections. This coup continues Africa’s long history of military interventions, following patterns seen in Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Gabon. Fragile institutions, corruption, and economic woes often fuel such takeovers, and Madagascar now joins the growing list of nations where the military asserts decisive political power.
