At least two people have died and ten more missing in KwaMashu and Umlazi as a result of the recent floods. Heavy rains are wreaking havoc in KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa. According to other reports overnight floods kill 20 in Durban and environs on 11 and 12 April 2022. The city of Durban is affected the most in the overnight floods.

There are fears that numerous people have been injured while damage to property was extensive in the overnight rainstorms. The military has been put on alert.

Local media report that major roads in the cities of Durban and Umlazi have been closed due to the flooding. The situation was aggravated by power outages while the country’s ageing infrastructure appeared unable to absorb the masses of water. On social media, residents share videos of water rushing into houses and settlements. A government spokesperson called on the public to stay indoors.

Key highways linking South Africa’s biggest port - Durban to the commercial hub of Johannesburg and its eastern seaboard were closed as severe flooding hit the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The N3 highway that connects Johannesburg to the port of Durban has been closed to southbound traffic because of debris on the road caused by the floods, according to KWaZulu-Natal’s Transport Department. Bridges on the N2, the main highway along the South Africa’s Indian Ocean coastline, have been washed away.

“The inclement weather conditions are expected to continue today” in areas around eThekwini municipality, which includes the city of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal’s Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs department said in a statement. “This increases the risk of flooding getting worse in all these areas.”

South Africa is this year experiencing the La Nina weather phenomenon, which usually causes above normal rainfall in the country and its neighbors. In January, many parts of the nation experienced the heaviest rains since tracking by district began in 1921.

As heavy rains wreak havoc in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, hundreds have taken to social media to convey messages of support and offer safety tips for affected families and communities. The rain has resulted in school closures, damage to infrastructure, car accidents and deaths.

The SA Weather Service issued a warning of heavy rains and flooding in the province that are expected to continue until Tuesday evening. It cautioned that due to soil being saturated and drainage systems being full, flooding could be expected. The army has been called in to provide support to disaster management teams in KwaZulu-Natal, who have been working since Monday to help residents affected by torrential rains. The provincial disaster management centre had enlisted help from the army to provide aerial support where necessary. The SA Weather Service has warned of significant rainfall in the eThekwini, KwaDukuza, Ray Nkonyeni, Umdoni, Mkhambathini, Richmond, Msunduzi, Ubuhlebezwe, Umlalazi, Umngeni, Umshwathi, Umuziwabantu, Umvoti, Umzimkhulu and Umzumbe municipalities.
