Dialogue between the Journalist (J) and the Minister of Interior (M) in English:
J – Fileleftheros newspaper has reported on its front page on the horrid conditions at Pournara being reported by the volunteers
M – Instead of some people accusing the Republic, especially abroad, it would be good if all of them assisted with the effort of the goverment to try to limit migration flows to our country…
J – Mr Minister… we ought to be honest with ourselves here, is the problem that such stories are being published or is it that the issue at hand is so big, and that these issues do in fact exist the way that they are being described?
M- No Mr Kyprianou, excuse me but there are no such possibilities/issues, the Red Cross…
J – So you are saying the volunteers are lying?
M – Listen let me tell you something Mr Kyprianou, excuse me but you are publishing news based on a letter that you say arrived at the Ministry of Interior - which let me add did not arrive here, I also saw the said letter in the newspaper – and you want to make up this issue from state television without previously cross-checking your sources; I would like to tell you that this is not permissible
J – One moment please, one moment, when we put forth this question
M – And I answered your question…
J – When we put the question forth – we referred to our source Fileleftheros newspaper and we informed you precisely about the content…
M – Yes, and I answered, and you are coming back to the same topic Mr Kyprianou…and I gave you an answer as the Minister of Interior of the Republic of Cyprus…
J – I will come back/ask again as many times as I wish Mr Minister. Are you going to be the one to tell me how many times I will ask again and come back to the same question? Are we serious here?
N – No but I will point out to you that I am talking seriously…
K – If I am not correct in my ways I will be judged by the people …I relied on Fileleftheros as my source
N – My Kyprianou no, you did not cross-reference
K – Fileleftheros has reported extremely serious information and I did not receive an answer to my question, that is why I am returning to the same topic again. So, if you want to, say that this is not the case/it is untrue; but to judge me as a journalist and my journalistic abilities to cross-check my sources and such, when I have told you that my source is Fileleftheros, I consider this unacceptable interference in my work.
