Community Based Ecosystem Retoration in Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park

The Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra, was inscribed in the World Heritage list in 2004 for its unique natural beauty, the importance of its habitats for the conservation of endemic species, and the significant role of its on-going ecological and biological processes in its ecosystems to the global landscape. The Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra comprises three widely separated National Parks ; Gunung Leuser, Kerinci Seblat and Bukit Barisan Selatan. They cover a total area of 2.5 million hectares, constituting one of the biggest conservation areas in Southeast Asia.
The main threats to The Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra integrity are deforestation and encroachment of National Park areas due to the expansion of monocultures, such as coffee, oil palm, rubber etc and infrastructure development. The continuous threats to the outstanding universal value of The Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra, led to the inscription of the property to the In-Danger list of World Heritage by the World Heritage Committee in 2011.
One of efforts to get out of the in-Danger list status, since April 2014, Yayasan Operasi Wallacea Terpadu or widely known as OWT conducted collaborative work with Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park to restore the encroached land of the Park through ecosystem restoration with accelerated natural forest regeneration approach.
