Types of Epithelial Tissue | Classification, Functions & Easy Mnemonic

Epithelial tissue lines body surfaces, cavities, and forms glands. This chart explains the major types of epithelial tissue with functions, locations, and an easy mnemonic—useful for medical, nursing, and paramedical exams.

Types of Epithelial Tissue:

1. Simple Squamous Epithelium:
• Flat, thin cells
• Allows diffusion and filtration
• Location: Alveoli, capillaries, Bowman’s capsule

2. Simple Cuboidal Epithelium:
• Cube-shaped cells
• Secretion and absorption
• Location: Kidney tubules, glands

3. Simple Columnar Epithelium:
• Tall column-like cells
• Absorption and secretion
• Location: Stomach, intestine

4. Ciliated Columnar Epithelium:
• Cilia present on surface
• Helps movement of mucus/particles
• Location: Respiratory tract, fallopian tubes

5. Stratified Squamous Epithelium:
• Multiple layers of cells
• Protection against abrasion
• Location: Skin, oral cavity, esophagus

6. Transitional Epithelium:
• Stretchable epithelium
• Changes shape with distension
• Location: Urinary bladder, ureters

Mnemonic:
