The Harlem Lie: Bumpy vs. MalcolmX 📁 #AmericanHistory #HistoryFacts

The "revolutionary brotherhood" in Godfather of Harlem is great television, but the real history was a lethal conflict of interest. While the show portrays Bumpy’s hitters as Malcolm’s personal shield, Malcolm actually turned that protection down to maintain his message of self-reliance. He refused to let his movement be bought or guarded by a heroin kingpin's gunmen.

In reality, they were on opposite sides of a chemical war. While Bumpy was the Genovese family’s top earner, flooding Harlem with heroin, Malcolm was leading a crusade to clean up that "poison". By 1964, Malcolm’s focus shifted toward a global human rights struggle—a move that made him a target far beyond street-level Mob politics. Malcolm faced his martyrdom at the Audubon Ballroom in 1965, but Bumpy didn't go out in a blaze of glory. He died three years later of a heart attack while eating a plate of chicken and waffles at Wells Restaurant.
One tried to wake the people up; the other made a fortune keeping them asleep.

The script sells the drama. We give you the receipts.
