Football has the ability to bring great joy and euphoria. But it also has the ability to bring great sadness and depression.

A 2020 study found that 22% of professional footballers in England and Wales had felt depressed or had considered self-harm.

These are stories of players who have struggled with their mental health, and some of the reasons why.
