Giga in D: from "Lessons for Harpsichord" Op. 2

Grade 6 ABRSM Piano 2023-2024 A2

This performance was played with highly accurate pitch and incorporated some very well planned dynamics. As the ABRSM edition says, “dynamics are left to the player’s discretion”.
The tempo was a little cautious for a Giga which historically is a
lively baroque dance. The tempo of this performance it comes in at around 70 bpm whereas the suggestion in the book is 88. This
doesn’t need to be exact, but a bit livelier would be more stylistic.
Tone was generally clear, but there were a few moments
especially around the ornaments where some notes were
indistinct e.g. the trills in bars 12 and 14.
Regarding articulation, this performance generally followed a pattern of separating all the quavers. This is probably too detached in style and especially considering we could make the piece a bit faster I would suggest slurring the first two quavers in any group of three and detaching the third.
The performance as a whole was secure, but as mentioned above,
needs a touch more “dance like” character to really capture the
intentions of the composer.
