I Became Obsessed with my Characters' Obsessions!

Writing a Novel from the Front Seat 🚗📝
How do you capture the grit and rhythm of a life on the road? For Hot Wax and If We Were Villains author @ML Rio, it meant living it. To write her upcoming book Hot Wax, she traded a desk for a dashboard and a diner booth.

The Total Immersion:
"I would get up in the morning, drive for like four hours... then I'd stop at a diner or something and write for a few hours in the middle of the afternoon, whatever I had just gone to go look at."

The "Method" Research:
M.L. Rio didn't just imagine the setting; she absorbed it through a "free-flowing" and obsessive process:

Sonic Saturation: She watched hundreds of hours of concert footage and listened to records obsessively to find the pulse of the story. 🎧🎸

Roadside Inspiration: By driving through the landscape and stopping at "weird little roadside bits of interest," she gathered the raw, atmospheric details that can't be found on a screen. 🗺️

The "Live" Draft: Writing in diners immediately after traveling allowed her to translate the energy of the road directly onto the page while it was still fresh.

Sometimes, to write a story that moves people, you have to keep yourself in constant motion.
