Walking In Finland: Tikkurila Vantaa (Nov 2021)

A narrated 4K walk in Tikkurila, Vantaa. The walk starts at Kukkaketo, "flower field", an area of 1960s residential blocks that were the first to start the residential developments in the area. I then walk to the old redbrick station building from the year 1862 that is now a museum and continue from there to the current railways station and shopping centre Dixi, which was built in 2015 and changed the whole area around it.

I mention the population of Vantaa and it should be 240 000, apologies for the unclear number I actually say! I also make a couple of other mistakes along the way (I must have still been tired from the flight recording this), but corrected them on the video. :)

From Dixi I continue to the library from 1984 and through the market square to the city hall past the new church opened in 2021. I walk through to Tikkuraitti, which is a pedestrian street lined by shops and restaurants and then make my way to Kielotie, which goes through Tikkurila as one of the main streets and it take us through some new and old residential areas.

Along the way we see Bio Grand, a small movie theatre in business since the year 1939 before continuing to the silk factory that was opened in 1934 and is now being redeveloped as a residential area, offices and event spaces, including a theatre.

From the redbrick silk factory I walk over to the old mill, Veininmylly, from 1934 and take the paths through the park surrounding the Keravanjoki river over to Heureka science centre.

I take the pedestrian bridge and walk over to the paint factory that started here in the 1860s and is now one of the biggest paint brands in Finland called Tikkurila after the area. The factory has moved, but parts of the old buildings have been preserved and now the building at the site functions as a culture space and houses a cafe. The walk ends near the Kukkaketo residential area and next to the Hotel Vantaa.

Nowadays Tikkurila is a transport, commercial and administrative hub in the city of Vantaa, which borders Helsinki. It is located around 16 km north of Helsinki's downtown district and you can reach the capital by train in around 15 minutes from the third busiest railway station in the country. New development and services due to the fast connection mean that the area has grown in popularity for years, but it also has a long history and was known as a market place already in the 16th century.

Tikkurila is not somewhere tourists often visit other than maybe to travel to the airport in Vantaa, 6 km from Tikkurila or to visit the science centre Heureka. But it is where I am staying in Finland and lived for quite a while. Towns like this are common near the big cities in Finland and offer more affordable living than the big cities.

This narrated walk is 4K at 60 FPS and was recorded with DJI Pocket 2 on 3rd November 2021.
