Chernobyl Is Still Dangerously Radioactive Today ☢️ #factsyoudontknow #facts #science #didyouknow

Reactor 4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which exploded in 1986, remains one of the most radioactive places on Earth.

During the disaster, the reactor core was exposed and large amounts of radioactive material—including isotopes like cesium-137, strontium-90, and plutonium—were released into the environment.

Inside the remains of Reactor 4, highly radioactive fuel debris, including a lava-like substance known as corium, still exists. This material continues to emit radiation decades later.

To contain the hazard, the site was first covered by a concrete structure called the sarcophagus, and later enclosed within the New Safe Confinement, a massive steel structure designed to prevent further radioactive release and allow for gradual dismantling.

While radiation levels have decreased over time due to radioactive decay, the reactor and surrounding exclusion zone will remain hazardous for hundreds to thousands of years, depending on the isotopes involved.
