This Big Cat Lives Like a Ghost in the Snow

The snow leopard is one of the most mysterious big cats on Earth. Known as the “ghost of the mountains,” it lives in the cold, rocky highlands of Central Asia, including the Himalayas, the Tibetan Plateau, Mongolia, and surrounding mountain regions.

With thick grey-white fur, dark rosette markings, wide paws, powerful legs, and a long tail, the snow leopard is perfectly adapted to life on snowy cliffs and steep rocky slopes. It usually lives alone and hunts wild goats, blue sheep, marmots, hares, and other mountain animals.

Sadly, snow leopards are vulnerable. Habitat loss, climate change, poaching, loss of prey, and human-wildlife conflict all threaten their future.
